Dear Colleagues,

At the beginning of our career there was Tulane Medical School. When we all were hard working, over-achieving college students wanting to be doctors, we had no idea what a pivotal role Tulane would play in our lives. Our acceptance into Tulane was an honor and a privilege resulting from hard work and achievement. It was also a commitment from Tulane to provide us with a quality medical education secondary to none.

Hurricane Katrina dealt Tulane Medical School, both faculty and facilities, a devastating blow. The present leadership, both medical and uptown, is doing a heroic job creating organization out of chaos. The organization and rebuilding could be greatly enhanced with our help.

At the very least, we all need to be members of the Tulane Medical Alumni Association and at the most, we can give our time and effort to help Tulane. In between there are different levels of donations that will benefit the rebuilding and the medical students.

When we were young, naïve, idealistic students, Tulane molded us into doctors; now the school that helped give us our medical career needs our help.

I thank you in advance for your new or renewed commitment to Tulane Medical School. Please contact Cynthia Hayes at (504) 862-8017 or chayes@tulane.edu to confirm your dedication to and appreciation of Tulane.

Sincerely,

Richard J. Field III, M.D.‘79
Former President (2005-2007)

Steadfast donor keeps his word to Tulane
New Wave, October 17, 2007
Keith Brannon

Sometimes keeping your word comes at a price. Perhaps no one knows that better than neurosurgeon Jim Doty, who, through an unexpected turn of events, ended up giving away 99 percent of his net worth to keep his promise to Tulane and others.

Doty, 51, gave stock worth approximately $4.4 million to the Tulane University School of Medicine. It is one of the largest individual gifts ever made to the school by an alumnus. At the time he made the gift, he had no idea he would be parting with what would turn out to be his entire personal fortune.
