On Friday August 1st, 2008 the School of Medicine welcomed its largest class in its 174 year history. One-hundred seventy-eight men and women from 36 states, 4 countries and 91 colleges and universities make up this year’s first year medical school class.

In Memoriam, Dr. Michael E. DeBakey

On Friday (July 11), Tulane lost one of the most distinguished alumni in the history of the university. Dr. Michael DeBakey, who earned undergraduate and medical degrees from Tulane, died at Methodist Hospital in Houston. He would have been 100 years old in September. DeBakey was a renowned cardiovascular surgeon, who counted among his patients Richard Nixon, Lyndon B. Johnson, John F. Kennedy, Russia’s Boris Yeltzin and Jordan’s King Hussein. He continued to perform heart surgery until his 90s and this past spring received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor awarded by Congress, at a ceremony in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. New "Fellows" Inspired by Community Needs

Six Tulane University graduate students will be working on community projects through the New Orleans Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Program, providing nutrition counseling, health education, legal services and tutoring in the New Orleans area. New Orleans represents the newest of 10 Schweitzer Fellowship Programs across the country, and it was recently established in New Orleans in response to the escalating health needs of the local community. Patent Leads to Promising Diabetes Drug
New Wave, June 24, 2008 – By Keith Brannon
One of the world’s biggest biotech companies has announced plans to launch large, multicenter trials of a promising new diabetes therapy originally developed by researchers at the Tulane University Peptide Research Lab. The treatment, developed in collaboration between Tulane researchers and the French pharmaceutical firm Ipsen SA, will enter phase III studies with patients. These clinical trials are aimed at being the definitive assessment of how effective the drug is, compared to current treatment. FULL STORY >>

Medical Education Innovator in the Limelight

The Tulane School of Medicine has honored a professor who was instrumental in redeveloping the medical curriculum to serve Tulane medical students following the evacuation of New Orleans because of Hurricane Katrina. The medical school used facilities provided by the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston for the academic year of the hurricane. The successful implementation of innovative and scholarly teaching approaches in the demanding field of medical pharmacology earned the School of Medicine’s 2008 Teaching Scholar Award for Craig W.
