AN OVERVIEW OF TULANE LEARNING COMMUNITIES
Established in 2016, Tulane Learning Communities (TLCs) foster the development of meaningful connections between Tulane School of Medicine students, faculty, and alumni. Through this program, graduates leave medical school with a network of support from the Tulane School of Medicine community.
Before starting their first year, medical students are placed into small groups or “faubourgs” (a New Orleans term for neighborhoods) based on their shared interests. Each faubourgs of 20-24 students is assigned a faculty leader and an alumni mentor, who share their experiences and resources with the students to prepare them for academic, personal, and professional success as they begin their medical careers.
How can alumni participate in mentoring our medical students?
We are excited to announce the integration of alumni mentors to the TLC program. As an alumni mentor, you will be able to interact with the next generation of Tulane-trained physicians and provide them with wisdom you have gleaned from your experience.
Alumni mentors are asked to attend two meetings for their assigned faubourg over one year (one meeting for their T-1 group and one for their T-2 group). These meetings will offer students valuable insights into various career paths and connect them with alumni who can provide guidance and support based on their own experiences.
Alumni mentors will also be invited to attend both all-class social events, although attending these events is optional.
Can alumni participate if they don’t live in the New Orleans area?
Absolutely! We still welcome the valuable mentorship you can offer from afar. If you're unable to attend meetings or events in person, a Zoom option will be available so you can participate from anywhere in the world.
How can I apply to be an alumni mentor?
Alumni mentors must be current Tulane Medical Alumni Association (TMAA) Members. TMAA offers annual ($100/year) and lifetime ($1,500/one time gift) membership options. To learn more about TMAA and to renew your membership, visit this page.
